On the 31st birthday of King Farouk on 11th February 1951, it was announced that he was engaged to Miss Nariman Sadiq, chosen from among all Egyptian women and the one to whom he gave preference over many women from the royal dynasty and even the class of nobles. The engagement images were impressive. Nariman, with little make-up and superbly coiffured golden hair, was admirably dressed.

To celebrate the King's engagement, a memorial day was held during which the Army appeared in parades, while the Air Force conducted air parades. Free meals were distributed to thousands of people in Cairo and Alexandria in addition to agricultural lands that were distributed to landless peasants. Many hopes were to be realized by the King's marriage. After having fathered three princesses with his ex-wife, he hoped to beget a son bearing his name after him to be the crown prince and then king of Egypt.

Four months passed between the engagement and wedding. The wedding had been scheduled for an earlier date, but the ceremony was delayed to 6th May 1951 because Nariman needed to undergo surgery for an appendectomy. It was a royal wedding ceremony in the full sense of the word, and a great event appropriate for the King of Egypt and Sudan. All state agencies were busy with the event, while songs and music were broadcast and decorations put in place.
