On 19th October 1954 the Evacuation Convention was signed between Egypt and Britain whereby British troops were to be evacuated from the Suez Canal and Egypt. Egypt accepted some concessions, however, including what was stipulated in Article IV: "In the event of an armed attack from abroad, upon any country, including Turkey, that is, at the time of signing this agreement, a party to the Mutual Defense Treaty of the Arab League, which was signed in Cairo on 13th April 1950, Egypt shall provide Britain with facilities which might be necessary to fix and to efficiently manage the base for war, including utilizing Egyptian ports within the maximum limits required for the above purposes, in addition to some other restrictions.”
