1964 – Diversion of The Nile at Aswan High Dam

Aswan High Dam or the High Dam is on the River Nile in southern Egypt. It was established during the era of Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Soviets helped build it. The dam greatly helped control the flood water of the Nile and mitigate their effects. The dam is used to generate electricity in Egypt.

The dam is 3,830 meters long, 980 meters wide at the base, 40 meters wide at the crest and 111 meters tall. It is composed of 43 million cubic meters of cement, iron and other materials. Eleven thousand cubic liters of water per second can pass through the dam. The construction of the dam began in 1960 and its estimated total cost was one billion dollars, one third of which was paid for by the Soviet Union. Four hundred Soviet experts helped to build the dam and it was completed in 1968.
