1959 – First Anniversary of United Arab Republic

The United Arab Republic is the official name of Egypt –Syria Unity, which was a beginning to unify the Arab countries, one of President Gamal Abdel Nasser  dreams. The Unity was announced on February 22, 1958 when the United Republic Charter was signed by Syrian President Shukri Quwatli and Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser. Abdel Nasser was chosen as a leader and Cairo was chosen as the capital of the new republic. In 1960, the two countries' parliaments were unified in the National Assembly in Cairo, and regional ministries were cancelled for a unified Ministry in Cairo. The Unity was terminated by a military coup in Damascus on September 28, 1961. Syria announced the establishment of the Syrian Arab Republic, while Egypt retained the title of the United Arab Republic until 1971when it was named after it.
