In 1952, Egypt was under British occupation, and the situation of the Arab world was largely under British and French occupation. Gamal Abdul Nasser thus found himself facing a confrontation to change these conditions. He advocated unity of identity and geographical and historical commonality, under the name of ‘Arab Progressive Socialism.’ Within this organization of Arab socialism was a secret and elite group of individuals selected to form the backbone of the organization which became Nasser’s Revolutionary Guard.
