On 11 February 1920 a Sultanic communiqué was issued to notify the cabinet of the birth of Prince Farouk.  There was rejoicing everywhere in the country, and a 21-gun salute.  Government employees and banks were granted a vacation, some prisoners were pardoned and charity was distributed to the poor.  King Farouk celebrated his eighteenth birthday in Abdeen Palace, Cairo.
